The Shona people were the founders of Great Zimbabwe, the ancient imperial capital of the region. About 85% of Zimbabweans identify themselves as Shona. The Ndebele are the next largest group, making up about 12 percent of the population. The Ndebele are a branch of the Zulu people that separated from the tribal group in the early 19th century.
